Gaze out your home’s windows. Do you see natural vistas? Or do you see dirt, grime, water spots, and streaks? If the glass renders your view less than stellar, you need better cleaning techniques. The following are some tips for effectively cleaning your glass so you can enjoy views of your garden or yard without the streaks!
Tips For Cleaning Your Glass
- Clean your glass on a dull or cloudy day: The sun’s warmth can evaporate your cleaning solution too quickly, leaving a residue behind. Wait for a cloudy or dull day before cleaning your glass.
- Vacuum debris: To avoid streaks and stains, remove debris (spider webs, dirt, etc.) with a vacuum before washing your glass.
- Use distilled water: Water from the tap may contain minerals (magnesium, calcium, etc.) that deposit on your glass. If you are using water to clean glass, opt for distilled water.
- Consider vinegar: A solution of ½ vinegar and ½ distilled water is a great way to reduce streaks. Put the solution in a spray bottle and use it like a commercial cleaner. Add a few drops of essential oil if you don’t like the smell of vinegar!
- Opt for ammonia: A few ounces of ammonia in a bucket of distilled water makes a great, streak-free glass cleaner.
- Try a strip applicator with a cloth head (available from most hardware stores). Use it to apply a mild, soapy solution to remove dirt, grime, spots, and stains.
- Consider a microfiber cloth: Ditch the paper towels and newspaper. Try a microfiber cloth instead, ensuring clean, lint-free glass. A microfiber cloth absorbs liquid and grabs grime and dirt.
- Try a squeegee: If used correctly, a squeegee cuts down on streaks. Hold it at a 45° angle. Start at the top left corner and pull the squeegee in an “S” shaped stroke. At the end, wipe the blade with a lint-free rag. Continue until you have cleaned the entire surface.
- Clean one section at a time: Rather than spraying the whole window at once, try wetting one small section at a time, ensuring the cleaning solution doesn’t dry before you wipe it away.
- Consider super fine steel wool for removing stubborn stains, spots, and stickers.
- Buff the glass: If, despite your best efforts, you are left with a few streaks, use a dry microfiber cloth to buff them away.
Try these tips for cleaning glass and enjoy a streak-free view of the beauty around you.
